Sotheby’s Spotlight: The Collector’s Eye: Works from the Collection of Frances Wells Magee

New York | 16 - 19 May

From Rothko to Frankenthaler, Frances Magee has always had a particularly talented eye when it comes to exquisite modern and contemporary works of art. Apart from Matisse’s phenomenal Femme assise sur un balcon, which was inherited, Magee acquired every other piece herself, with an astounding example from Jasper Johns’ single numerals series as well as a delightfully colorful painting from Sam Francis. Magee bought most of her art in the 60s. These works were specifically bought to furnish her amazing home that was built at the time.

Works from the Frances Wells Magee collection will be offered in the Contemporary and Modern Evening and Day auctions as a part of the New York Sales at Sotheby’s New York.
