- Declaration of Independence

O n June 26th, Sotheby’s New York will hold the Founding Documents of the United States auction, featuring the only copy in private hands of just five recorded copies of an early printing of the Declaration of Independence—a rare newspaper-broadside hybrid printed shortly after John Dunlap’s historic first edition broadside.

This edition stands out for its deliberate execution and profound understanding of the historical moment, distinguishing it from other contemporary newspaper printings. The sale will also feature strictly contemporary printings of all three of America’s founding—and fundamental—documents: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

Selby Kiffer, Sotheby’s International Senior Specialist of Books & Manuscripts, and Seth Kaller, a renowned dealer of historical documents, are renowned for their unrivaled expertise in handling and appraising the most amount of significant documents from America's founding era.

Join Selby and Seth in a conversation about the fascinating backstory of John Holt’s printing of the Declaration of Independence and their insights into their extensive experience handling and appraising iconic documents dating back to 1776.

Founding Documents of the United States will be held live at Sotheby’s New York on 26 June at 12:00 PM EST.
