Dreaming in Glass: Unveiling The Metropolitan Museum’s Tiffany Windows

New York | 13 December
…It is evident that the glassmakers’ art has come to stay, that its lines of development among us are legitimate, artistic and full of promise.
Louis Comfort Tiffany, 1898

I n partnership with Tiffany & Co., Sotheby’s is thrilled to present two extraordinary leaded glass windows from The Metropolitan Museum of Art—Grapevine Trellis and Parrots and Hibiscus—being sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund. These magnificent works are accompanied by a remarkable selection from the Maude Feld Collection, showcasing rare and important ‘fancy goods’ and masterworks of Tiffany Studios’ artistry.

T he Grapevine Trellis Window features intricate grape leaves in vibrant green hues accented with purple, blue, and pink, intertwined with twisting vines of brown glass and sculptural tooled lead. Framed by a white-streaked yellow trellis, this dynamic composition exemplifies the dimensional brilliance of Tiffany Studios.

Equally captivating, the Parrots and Hibiscus Window, created 20 years later, depicts Carolina parakeets with striking plumage crafted from yellow, green, and sapphire-streaked glass. Noteworthy for its masterful use of rippled aquamarine glass typically reserved for angelic wings, this window showcases Tiffany’s genius in creating movement, vibrancy, and beauty regardless of size.

These beautiful windows are a part of Dreaming in Glass: Masterworks by Tiffany Studios, Featuring Property From The Metropolitan Museum of Art, with live auction on 13 December.
