Yayoi Kusama’s enchantingly whimsical Hat from 1980 is extraordinarily rare and important—it is the first and largest known work on canvas the artist created that features her iconic hat motif. The unique and exquisitely rendered work has not been seen in public for decades, having remained as a treasured anchor piece within the esteemed private collection of Dr. Ryutaro Takahashi, renowned patron of the arts and long-standing supporter of Kusama, for over twenty-five years.
The present work will appear in the Modern and Contemporary Evening Auction, presented in partnership with Celine, on 11 November 2024 at Sotheby’s Maison in Hong Kong.
