Bowie Delivers a Record-Breaking Night for British Art

London | November 2016

Records fell at Sotheby’s as bidders from around the world battled for David Bowie’s private art collection. In total, eleven new records were set for works of 20th Century British Art, led by Frank Auerbach’s 'Head of Gerda Boehm' which sold for £3.8m. Paintings by leading contemporary artists were also the subject of prolonged bidding battles, led by Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 'Air Power' which sold for £7.1m. The first session on 10 November doubled the high estimate, totalling £24.3m, and exceeded the high estimate for the entire three-part series.
