Walter Spies is a Russian-born German artist who left a profound legacy and influence on Indonesia’s artistic heritage, all within a short span of his life. Tierfabel is celebration of the local species and nature that Spies observed closely throughout his time in Bali. The present lot features three deer, which are amongst Spies most popular animal subjects, as well as rarer subjects such as the tiger, snake and orangutan. Together these animals weave together a childlike and mythical story that sheds light on a moral lesson.
