One of the greatest collections of Orientalist paintings in existence, the cinematic canvases are precious records of the region’s history, as depicted by artists such as Jean-Léon Gérôme, Ludwig Deutsch, Gustav Bauernfeind and Osman Hamdy Bey. Sotheby’s will offer 40 works from the collection in a dedicated auction (22 October | London) and all 155 paintings in the collection will be on view in a never-before-seen exhibition from 11 – 15 October.
