  Traditional Iberian chrysoberyl parure, circa 1800.

  Lustrous and attractive pale yellow chrysoberyls were popular in the 18^th and first half of the 19^th Century, particularly in Portugal, which imported large quantities from its Brazilian colonies. Due to their high degree of fire, these gems were commonly used as an alternative to diamond. In the 19^th Century, such topaz pieces became known as Minas Novas jewellery referring to the mining state of Minas Gerais.
