Enrico Castellani’s Superficie paintings, of which Superficie Arancione is a superb example, occupy a position of utmost importance in the history of abstraction in the later twentieth century.

Formally trained as an architect, Castellani manipulates the physical surface of his canvases to alter perceptions of space. In Superficie Arancione each three dimensional protrusion enables the ebb and flow of the canvas, creating a seamless variation of light.

Richard Prince, Untitled (Portrait) (Pentagram), 2014. Estimate £70,000–100,000.

Updating his iconic brand of appropriation for a truly twenty first century audience, Richard Prince’s Instagram pictures blend his infamous ‘rephotography’ of advertisement images with a very contemporary source: Instagram.

As the artist explains, “This past spring, and half the summer, the iPhone became my studio. I signed up for Instagram. I pushed things aside. I made room. It was easy. Composed in 1983, Keith Haring and Juan Dubose is a tender and haunting diptych of the artist Keith Haring and his friend and lover Juan Dubose.

Here Warhol creates a bipartite portrait of Haring and Dubose that tells of at once the fondness of their relationship, the inconsistencies beneath romantic love, their tragically premature deaths by AIDS, and the garish insensitivity of the mediated relay of these events.
