  Mikhail Larionov, Still Life.
  Estimate £1,000,000–1,500,000

  Larionov was a leading member of the Russian avant-garde and this still life belongs to his most sought-after Russian period. Larionov ended up in France in 1915, unable to return to Russia to collect the contents of his studio. The artist was eventually reunited with this painting in Paris in 1927 and it remained in his studio until his death.

  Konstantin Makovsky, Boyarina.
  Estimate £80,000–120,000

  The most in-demand society portrait painter of his day, Konstantin Makovsky was also famed for his historical depictions of pre-Petrine Russia, in particular domestic scenes of boyar life. The artist originally intended this subject to have an even more elaborate headdress, and the pentimenti of the original is just visible in the background.

  This beautiful seascape by the master of the genre depicts ships off the Côte d’Azur. The town of Menton lies to the right and the last golden rays of the setting sun illuminate the Esterel mountain range in the distance.

  Vasily Polenov, The Oyat River.
  Estimate £450,000–650,000

  Polenov is known to have painted at least five views of the Oyat River in Northern Russia; the other four belong to Russian public collections. This work is recorded in the artist’s handwritten inventory preserved in the family’s archive at Polenovo, the artist’s former estate and now a museum.

  Boris Kustodiev, Portrait of Count Alexei Pavlovich Ignatiev.
  Estimate £250,000–350,000

  As one of the most talented students of the artist Ilya Repin, the young Boris Kustodiev was selected to assist Repin on the monumental canvas Ceremonial Meeting of the State Council on May 7, 1901, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II. This portrait was exhibited in Moscow, Paris and Venice at the 1907 Biennale.

  Vladimir Weisberg, Loaves and Apples on a Burgundy Tablecloth.
  Estimate £80,000–120,000

  One of the earliest works by Weisberg ever to be offered at auction, this painting belongs to the artist’s highly-coloured, highly-collectable period before he abandoned colour altogether in his ‘white on white’ canvases. Weisberg was a student of the Jack of Diamonds painter Ilya Mashkov, and his influence can be seen in the sheer physicality of the heavily impastoed, generously piled loaves and fruit.
