On 5 November, Susumu Kamijo was joined by fellow artist Jonas Wood as well as a few four-legged friends at Sotheby’s S|2 Gallery in New York for a book signing and pop-up exhibition of Susumu’s colourful Pop-inspired depictions of poodles. The illustrated edition features an anecdote-filled interview between the two artists, who met as MFA students at the University of Washington in 2000. “I’m really excited about this collaboration, especially since it’s my first book,” said Susumu, “and Jonas and I have known each other forever.” Sotheby’s Nick Cinque mingled with guests amid the exhibition of seven canine portraits, which are based on images culled from the Internet and dog magazines. “I go through thousands of photos of poodles,” said Susumu. “It has to be one that hits me. Sometimes I choose an image because I know it’s going to be fun.” Click ahead for a recap.
