The models for the picture were the most famous of all the Pre-Raphaelite muses, Jane Morris (on the left), Lizzie Siddall (in the centre) and Georgiana Burne-Jones (on the right).

John Roddam Spencer Stanhope, Andromeda.
Estimate £100,000-150,000.

The subject of the rescue of the Greek Princess Andromeda was a popular subject for Victorian artists, famously painted by Edward Burne-Jones whose work had a significant influence upon Stanhope. Stanhope was from a wealthy aristocratic family which meant that he was able to paint what appealed to him rather than being led by the whims of patrons – this gave his pictures a wonderful freedom of personal expression.

Motley is appearing at auction for the first time in its history, having been in the collection of the famous Hoover family of American industrialists since it was painted in 1930. Laura Knight was one of the most prominent female painters of her generation and this sale includes ten of her pictures.

John Frederick Herring Snr., Pharaoh's Horses.

Herring was recognised in is lifetime as the most successful animal portraitist of his age. Pharaoh’s Horses depicts an Arab stallion named Imaum who had been given to Queen Victoria by the Imaum of Muscat but was sold and purchased by Herring to serve as a model for his most famous pictures.

David Roberts, R.A., View from Waterloo Bridge, Embracing St. Pauls, Somerset House and Temple.

In the 1860s Roberts painted a series of views along the Thames in London, this being one of the most significant. Roberts’ aim was to capture a London that he saw as rapidly changing as the building of Bazalgette’s Victoria Embankment changed the river forever.
