Paris • October 2024

Join us for a week of exceptional sales and exhibitions to inaugurate our new Parisian space.

Sotheby’s warmly invites you to the opening of our magnificent new Parisian headquarters. Located at 83 Faubourg Saint-Honore, previously home to the renowned Bernheim-Jeune gallery, the building sits in the heart of the city’s gallery and luxury district. Opening festivities begin 12 October with a week of sales and exhibitions timed to coincide with the international Art Basel fair.

Join us to celebrate the centenary of Surrealism with our major auctions, "Surrealism & its Legacy" and "Modernités." Tour the galleries to discover our inaugural exhibition, "Excellence à la française," showcasing masterpieces of French art through the centuries. And visit a special traveling exhibition of works from the New York Sales season in November.

Our iconic building at 76 Faubourg will remain open during this opening week, where you will find works from a collection dedicated to Joseph Beuys. We will also present a private sales exhibition promoting various artists who have lived and worked between London and Paris, and highlights from the Giordano collection. We look forward to welcoming you.

“Our new building in Paris is the fruit of our past success in Paris and an emblem of our belief in, and our passion for, this extraordinary city. An historic landmark, it is elegant, alluring, and imaginatively adapted for the 21st century. But more than that, it is the art and objects within it that will make the building complete – an irresistible feature in the cultural landscape of Paris."

Excellence à la Française

A celebration of the excellence and diversity of French art through the centuries on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Paris flagship store

Our inaugural exhibition will unveil a selection of historical works on loan from private collectors, tracing the history of French artistic creation through a selection of emblematic works, ranging from the 10th century to the 20th century. Each period is represented by one or more iconic works that illustrate French creative genius throughout the centuries and its various influences. The quality and variety of the pieces presented will be a true celebration of the technical and stylistic innovation of French artists as well as the talent of fine craftsmanship. This tribute will also reflect the diversity of specialties offered by Sotheby's various art departments, such as Decorative Arts and Design, Modern and Contemporary Art, Old Master Paintings and Drawings, High Jewelry and Watches, African and Oceanic Art, Books and Manuscripts, Furniture and Decorative Objects, Sculpture, Fine Wines and Spirits, Ceramics and Silverware, and Asian Art.

This event will feature a scenography inviting a dialogue between a chest of drawers by Joseph Baumhauer, Diego Giacometti’s personal chair, or a portrait of Countess Stanislas Marie Adelaide de Clermont-Tonnerre as a sultana by Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun.
