Sotheby's Asia

F rom 6 February, visit our ground floor exhibition and experience The Piprahwa Gems of the Historical Buddha. On view for the first time in Hong Kong, these gem relics rank among the most extraordinary archaeological discoveries of all time. Excavated in 1898 by English estate manager William Claxton Peppé at Piprahwa in northern India, the gem relics comprise gemstones, pearls, pattern-impressed gold and silver sheets and were found buried together in reliquaries with the corporeal relics of the Historical Buddha. Peppé was permitted to retain a small but magnificent portion of the gems, which have been passed down within the family for generations, and will now be offered in a standalone auction within the forthcoming Chinese art spring season this May.

Stay tuned for further announcements of events in Hong Kong and across Asia.
