The Collection of John Cheim is a singularly exceptional grouping of works that capture an all-encompassing vision and curatorial spirit. Together, the collection reflects decades of a life spent championing artists, their vision and the objects of stunning beauty which result.
This November, Sotheby’s will offer a selection of works from the Collection of John Cheim across the Contemporary Evening Auction and Contemporary Day Auction, allowing for a rare glimpse of the extraordinary gallerist, curator, and visionary who reshaped the New York art world. The Evening Sale group will be led by Joan Mitchell’s Sunflowers as well as works by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Louise Bourgeois, Lynda Benglis and Alice Neel. A further selection will be offered in a single-owner sequence in the Contemporary Day Auction by artists including Jenny Holzer, Ron Gorchov, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alex Katz, Sean Scully, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol and many more.
Regarded today as one of the most respected figures in the art world, John Cheim is renowned for his long-standing commitment and dedication to artists. After spending nearly twenty years as director at Robert Miller Gallery before co-founding Cheim & Read in 1997, his exceptional reputation is distinguished by a lifetime of advocacy - particularly for women artists – and his singular aptitude for finding and retaining artistic talents. Over 45 years of breaking new ground for artists, John Cheim has assembled a thoughtful personal collection which reflects an intense love and appreciation from the very artists themselves. Filtered through an unparalleled aesthetic sensibility, every work in the Collection tells a story: from Joan Mitchell’s seminal masterwork Sunflowers, a personal gift of the artist, to pioneering works from many other of the most influential artists of our time. Together, the collection tells the fascinating story of “a life of beauty.”
