Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much is a diamond worth?
Sotheby's specialists will carefully and thoughtfully provide an estimate for your diamond based on carat weight, color, clarity, cut, fluorescence, rarity, and overall market value. While each diamond is unique, Sotheby’s adheres to grading diamonds parallel to the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) global standards of diamond certification.

Carat is the standard unit of measure for a diamond’s weight, with one carat weighing the equivalent of 0.2 grams.

Color refers to the white to yellow to brown hues present in a diamond. Colorless diamonds are considered to fall within the D, E, and F grades and remain the most desirable for white diamond, while G - Z diamonds exhibit hues of yellow and brown.

Clarity refers to the presence or absence of inclusions and blemishes, ranging from internally flawless (IF) diamond that appear practically flawless until 10x magnification, to included (I) diamonds that often exhibit blemishes visible to the naked eye.

Cut determines a diamond’s radiance and sparkle with a grading system that ranges from “Excellent” to “Poor.” To determine the quality of the cut, a gemologist will determine how successfully the stone reflects light by analyzing symmetry, proportion, and polish.
  • Where to Sell Diamonds?
Sotheby’s is a leading platform when it comes to selling your precious diamond jewelry, closing historic diamond sales for some of the most magnificent stones discovered. Our team of expert gemologists ensure that your diamond is evaluated with the latest industry insights and tools. Furthermore, your diamond jewelry will be presented to a global platform of established collectors and buyers, ensuring that your consignments have the highest exposer for the opportunity to sell.
  • How to Sell a Diamond
Sotheby’s offers multiple sales channels, including Sotheby’s Auction and Sotheby’s Buy-Now Marketplace. Sotheby’s Auction is preferable for incredibly high value diamonds or jewelry with greater fluctuations in pricing potential due to rarity. This model inherently poses greater risk or reward to the seller based on the market during the time of auction. Alternatively, Sotheby’s Buy-Now Marketplace guarantees a set net payout to sellers prior to any sales, eliminating any risk in selling for lower than desired. Additionally, Buy-Now Marketplace provides sellers with an extended period of sale (90 days) and, upon discussion, the opportunity for an extended listing time as well.
