Multicultural celebration of the non-Western world
Housed in one of Rotterdam’s historical monuments, the Wereldmuseum (World Arts Museum) offers a beautiful view of the Maas River. The building opened its doors in 1851 as the Royal Yacht Club of Prince Hendrik, the brother of King Willem III, and its decorative facade is still graced with many maritime details. Known previously as the Museum of Geography and Ethnology, then the Museum of Ethnology, the Wereldmuseum showcases cultural diversity, with Asia and Oceania as the two areas for which it holds internationally acclaimed permanent collections. Since 2017, the museum has partnered with the three locations of the National Museum of World Cultures — Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, the Africa Museum in Berg en Dal and the Museum Volkenkunde in Leiden — and since 2023 these have been united as Wereldmuseum Amsterdam, Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal and Wereldmuseum Leiden. The expanded collection features nearly 450,000 objects, 260,000 photographic images and approximately 350,000 items of documentary footage.
