Historic British masterworks and more
The Walker Art Gallery, which opened in 1877, was founded by Liverpool philanthropist and brewer Sir Andrew Barclay Walker to showcase his internationally-renowned collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art. It has since grown into one of Europe’s finest galleries, with a collection that spans the Middle Ages to today, ranging from outstanding modern and contemporary works to Medieval and Renaissance masterpieces. Some of the greatest British artists of the last century are represented in the contemporary galleries, from Lucian Freud to David Hockney. There is a fine Impressionist collection, paintings by 17th- and 18th-century masters including Poussin, Rembrandt and Gainsborough, and a celebrated Pre-Raphaelite collection. The gallery also hosts the biennial John Moores Painting Prize, which honors contemporary painting in the U.K.
