One of America’s top encyclopedic collections
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is a leading U.S. art museum with nearly 50,000 works of art from around the world dating as far back as 6,000 years. Opened in 1936, the museum has exceptional African and east and south Asian art holdings, as well as collections of art nouveau, art deco and fine English silver, and the largest public collection of Fabergé and Russian decorative arts in an American museum. Its Paul Mellon bequest features important impressionist, post-impressionist and British works. German expressionism is well represented as is postwar international work and African and diaspora collections, including many pieces by Gee’s Bend quilters and a specially created sculpture, “Rumors of War” by Kehinde Wiley, which refers to equestrian monument tradition. The museum has undergone various renovations and expansions – its most recent is due to begin in 2025 and will add a new 100,000 square foot wing and entrance through the Robins Sculpture Garden.
