Medici treasures in historic splendor
The Treasury of the Grand Dukes, formerly known as the Silver Museum, is located on two floors of the Palazzo Pitti — the ground floor and part of the first floor — that originally served as the summer residence of the Medici family. Twenty-five beautiful rooms with ornately frescoed walls host objects ranging from vases, ivory, gemstones and cameos to jewels, crystals and silver, drawn from the collection of Cosimo I de’ Medici, the first Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his successors, “Lorenzo il Magnifico” (Lorenzo the Magnificent), Cosimo I, Francesco I, Mattias and Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici. In addition to this varied collection, the museum also holds an impressive selection of 17th to 20th century jewelry, with the addition of contemporary pieces.
