Decorative arts in historic splendor
Pieces from the Kunstgewerbemuseum (Museum of Decorative Arts), dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, are displayed across three floors of the baroque palace of Köpenick, a complement to the museum’s main venue for its collection at the Kulturforum. Schloss Köpenick (Köpenick Palace) was built between 1677 and 1690 and is located on a man-made island on the outskirts of the old town center of Köpenick, in south-east Berlin. It has been used as an exhibition space by the Museum of Decorative Arts since 1963. In 2004, the palace complex was renovated and the permanent exhibition “RoomArt” installed: it focuses on Renaissance, baroque and rococo decorative arts. Schloss Köpenick includes historic interiors, including the Wiesentheid Chamber of Mirrors (1724-25) and the Lacquer Room (1740-50), and retains much of the original baroque plasterwork from when it was built.
