Rich holdings of West Coast artists
The San José Museum of Art (SJMA) in Silicon Valley is housed in a landmark 1892 building in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which was once the Civic Library. A 1991 addition by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill is connected by a towering, light-filled atrium. SJMA’s exhibitions – a mix of original and touring shows – focus on international modern and contemporary work, and often explore the intersection of technology and art. Established and emerging names are all on the roster. Its collection numbers some 2,500 pieces and the museum receives particular national recognition as a stellar showcase for California artists.
