The West Coast's original modern art hub
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has been vital to the contemporary scene in the city since 1935. SFMOMA was the first institution on the west coast to devote itself to modern and contemporary art and has amassed an internationally renowned collection of 33,000 works by leading figures. Its significant exhibition program features American and global artists. In 1995, the museum opened in its Mario Botta-designed building in the South of Market district. An expanded SFMOMA opened in 2016, with a major extension designed by the award-winning firm Snøhetta, doubling the institution's gallery space. It is now one of the world’s largest modern art museums, and also houses the Pritzker Center for Photography, the largest space for the medium in any U.S. art museum.
