About the Museum
Dating back to the 12th century, the Sint-Janshospitaal (Old Saint John's Hospital) in Bruges is one of the oldest hospitals in the world. Once a shelter for the sick and the poor, the hospital is now a museum open to the public, boasting an extensive display of medical instruments and archives as well as six masterpieces by Flemish master Hans Memling. These are complemented by a collection of religious paintings and sculptures, silverwork, reliquaries and apothecary pots that reflect 800 years of the institution’s history.
