Museum zu Allerheiligen

Schaffhausen | Switzerland

Picturesque abbey for art and antiquities

The eclectic Museum zu Allerheiligen (All Saints Museum) is located in the picturesque old Swiss town of Schaffhausen in a former Benedictine monastery complex that dates to the 11th century. Its collection of art spans the 15th century to today with pieces by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Ferdinand Hodler, Félix Vallotton, Otto Dix and Adolf Dietrich, among others. Alongside temporary exhibitions, the museum’s permanent displays highlight the Ebnöther Archaeological Collection, the most important Swiss collection of ancient objects from the Americas, which is shown with artworks from the Ancient Orient and the Mediterranean region; local archaeology, natural history and culture over the past 1,000 years; and curated selection from the museum’s collection of 2,000 paintings, 300 sculptures and 30,000 works on paper. The site also included Switzerland’s largest Romanesque church, a historic cloister and an herb garden, celebrated as one of the most beautiful public gardens in the city.
