Glass palace for Mexico’s contemporary currents
The Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC) is a contemporary art museum located on the Ciudad Universitaria campus of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Mexico City, Latin America’s largest and most prestigious public university. Opened in 2008, the museum was designed by architect Teodoro González de León, who created a striking 14,000-square-foot modernist building with a dramatic glass façade set at a 45-degree angle. MUAC’s collection aims to document the history of contemporary art in Mexico, and comprises over 2,000 works by Mexican artists spanning from 1952 — the year that Ciudad Universitaria was inaugurated — to present day, making it the largest public collection of contemporary artists working in Mexico, both mainstream and underground. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum regularly hosts temporary exhibitions by renowned artists such as Helen Escobedo, Francis Alÿs, Cecilia Vicuña, Ai Weiwei and Anish Kapoor.
