Hometown tribute to the Spanish master
The Museo Picasso Málaga realizes Pablo Picasso’s desire to leave a part of his legacy to his native city. Opened in 2003 after more than 50 years of planning, the institution serves as a fitting monument to the depth and variety of Picasso’s genius. Housed in the splendid 16th-century Buenavista Palace, located in the heart of the city’s historic quarter, with later expansions, the museum presents a chronological and thematic overview of the artist’s career. The collection includes 233 works, many donated by Christine and Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, the artist’s daughter-in-law and grandson, along with an additional 43 works on temporary loan. Together they span his protean career, from his earliest academic studies and personal takes on the classics to cubist experiments, explorations in ceramics, his re-workings of the Old Masters and his late paintings of the 1970s.
