The Impressionist collection displayed here is unequalled worldwide, with seminal works by all the great French masters, including Claude Monet, Édouard Manet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin and Alfred Sisley. Art’s greatest innovations from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the First World War were born in France; this museum – housed in a beautiful old railway station built on the banks of the Seine for Paris’s great Exposition Universelle of 1900 to celebrate the promise of modernity – comprehensively surveys the richness and diversity of those accomplishments.
