Lower Belvedere

Vienna | Austria

An exhibition venue with royal credentials

Along with the Upper Belvedere, the Lower Belvedere is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site overlooking the city of Vienna, celebrated for its spectacular baroque architecture and interiors. The complex was originally built for the diplomat and collector Prince Eugene of Savoy and features extensive gardens. The Lower Belvedere palace and Orangery are now venues for world-class temporary exhibitions, with a focus on Austrian artists in an international context and key movements in western art history. Medieval treasures are on view in the former stables, and magnificent state rooms, preserved in their 18th-century condition, are also on view to the public. They include the two-story Marble Hall, the shimmering Gold Cabinet and the Hall of Grotesques, with decoration inspired by Roman frescos.
