Leeum Samsung Museum of Art

Starchitect complex uniting tradition and modernity

Leeum Samsung — or the Samsung Museum of Art — in Seoul, Korea, is a museum of two parts: one is dedicated to traditional Korean art and the other to international modern and contemporary art. Opened in 2004, the museum has grown over the years, with different sections of the building being designed by renowned architects including Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel and Rem Koolhaas. The traditional art collection includes pieces of ceramic art, Buddhist art, painting, calligraphy, metalwork and woodcraft, and 36 of them are designated as national treasures. The modern and contemporary collection spans painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video, including works by Jean-Michael Basquiat, Joseph Beuys and Takashi Murakami. The museum is run by the Samsung Foundation of Culture, a philanthropic arm of the Korean electronics company Samsung.
