Switzerland’s modern art authority
The Kunst Museum Winterthur accommodates one of the finest collections of modern art in Switzerland, with outstanding groups of art from the late 19th century to the present. The 1915 museum building, designed by Rittemeye and Furrer, and the newer extension from 1995, designed by Gigon and Guyer, provide an exceptional ambience to display the museum’s collection. The older building exhibits French art from around the turn of the century, showcasing works by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard, and Félix Vallotton, in addition to masterpieces of classical modern art by Hans Arp, Georges Braque, Sonia Delaunay, Juan Gris, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, René Magritte and Piet Mondrian. In contrast, the newer extension houses international contemporary masterpieces from artists such as Philip Guston, Brice Marden, Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Ryman, Gerhard Richter and Arte Povera artists. In 2017, the Kunstmuseum Winterthur merged with the Museum Oskar Reinhart and Villa Flor to form the Kunst Museum Winterthur, which comprises the three institutions: the Kunst Museum Winterthur | Beim Stadthaus (the former Kunstmuseum Winterthur), Kunst Museum Winterthur | Reinhart am Stadtgarten; and Kunst Museum Winterthur | Villa Flora. The Reinhart am Stadtgarten, which holds German, Austrian and Swiss art from early romanticism and realism, plus Dutch Golden Age masterpieces, is currently closed for renovation until 2025. The Villa Flora, the former residence of Hedy Hahnloser-Bühler and the physician Arthur Hahnloser, displays post-impressionist paintings, works by the Nabis and Fauves, and contemporary Swiss art in the stunning art nouveau residence.
