Contemporary art in scenic surroundings
Kistefos — a private contemporary art museum and sculpture park located in Jevnaker, Norway, a municipality 80 kilometers north of Oslo — describes itself as “a cultural destination with a twist.” The twist is a literal one: a 1,000-square-meter building that turns as it spans 60 meters across the Randselva river, designed by the Danish star architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Opened in 2019, the cutting-edge design has won several awards and been named a “must-see cultural destination” by The New York Times. Kistefos was established in 1996 by the Norwegian businessman and art collector Christen Sveaas, on the site of his grandfather’s wood pulp mill. The mill now acts as a living industrial museum while two art galleries host yearly exhibitions and the surrounding scenic sculpture park includes works by Yayoi Kusama, Claes Oldenburg and Olafur Eliasson, among others. The sculpture park can be visited all year round while the museum is only open from May to November.
