About the Museum
The Istanbul Modern, Turkey’s first private museum to organize modern and contemporary art exhibitions, was founded in 2004 and occupies an 8,000 square meter site on the shores of the Bosphorus.
The Istanbul Modern presents a wide variety of works ranging from painting and sculpture to installation and video, from the early 20th century to our day. Istanbul Modern’s permanent collection features Turkey’s evolution of modern and contemporary art by showcasing works by prominent artists in chronological order. The texts accompanying the works explain the social, cultural, economic, and political dynamics of this process. The museum additionally brings together works by prominent representatives of contemporary art from both Turkey and different countries.
