Stalwart of Turkish cultural identity
Founded in 2004, Istanbul Modern is Turkey’s first private museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art, with a primary focus on Turkish artists. The museum’s permanent collection features a diverse range of works, including painting, sculpture, installation and video, primarily from the second half of the 20th century, alongside select earlier pieces. Together this traces Turkey’s artistic evolution through a chronological display of works by prominent artists such as Fahrelnissa Zeid, Erol Akyavaş, Nuri İyem, Nejad Devrim, Adnan Çoker and Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu. In 2023, Istanbul Modern reopened in a striking new building designed by Renzo Piano and inspired by the waters of the Bosphorus.
