Flourishing integration of art and nature

Instituto Inhotim, located in Minas Gerais, Brazil, is one of the largest open-air museums in the world. Conceived in the 1980s by businessman Bernardo de Mello Paz and opened to the public in 2006, this private, not-for-profit institution combines an art museum and botanical garden. Spanning 3,000 acres, it is uniquely situated between the rich biomes of the Atlantic Forest and the Cerrado tropical savanna. Its gardens host more than 4,300 rare species from all continents, and the museum holds a broad collection of around 700 artworks by more than 60 artists, displayed both outdoors and across 24 galleries, with many works created through special commissions. Four galleries are dedicated to temporary exhibitions, while 20 showcase permanent, solo artist displays, featuring works by renowned figures such as Brazilian sculptor Tunga, Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, South African artist William Kentridge and Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama.
