Het Spilliaert Huis

Ostend | Belgium

About the Museum

This museum, dedicated to the painter and graphic artist Léon Spilliaert, opened in 2016 in his birthplace, the Belgian resort town of Ostend. Via temporary exhibitions, events and research facilities, the museum aims to encourage the understanding of Spilliaert’s visionary body of work, which was influenced by expressionism and symbolism. Born in 1881, the predominantly self-taught artist produced haunting self-portraits and enigmatic landscapes and seascapes, often populated by single figures and imbued with melancholy. Spilliaert frequently depicted the shorefront views and architecture of his home town, including the art deco Thermae Palace on Ostend’s promenade, where Het Spilliaert Huis is located.
