Neapolitan legacy with Caravaggio’s swansong
With locations in Milan, Turin, Naples and Vicenza, the Gallerie d’Italia forms a network of cultural and museum hubs belonging to Intesa Sanpaolo, Italy’s largest bank. Opened in 2007—and moved to its new location, the historic former Banco di Napoli building, in 2022—the museum shares the extensive Intesa Sanpaolo art collections with the public. The Gallerie d’Italia in Naples is home to a rich collection of paintings and sculptures by southern Italian artists from the 17th to 20th centuries, as well as a collection of Attic and Magna Graecia pottery. The most famous artwork in the museum’s collection is Caravaggio’s final painting, “Martyrdom of Saint Ursula,” which was completed in 1610, shortly before his death. It is displayed alongside other masterpieces by Louis Finson, Artemisia Gentileschi and Bernardo Cavallino, plus a section of innovative landscape and view paintings that developed between the 18th and 19th centuries in Naples.
