Foundation E.G. Bührle

Zurich | Switzerland

World-renowned impressionist brilliance

This foundation was established in 1960 by the heirs of German-born Swiss industrialist and collector Emil George Bührle. Originally housed in a villa adjacent to Bührle’s former Zurich home, the foundation holds a significant collection of European paintings and sculptures from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection is particularly notable for its richness in impressionism and post-impressionism, featuring works by the Nabis, Fauves, Cubists and other pioneers of the French avant-garde. Highlights include Paul Cézanne’s “The Boy in the Red Waistcoat,“ as well as distinguished works by Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir and Degas. In 2021, the collection was relocated to the Kunsthaus Zurich, where it is now displayed on the second floor of the museum’s new extension designed by David Chipperfield.
