Renowned idyll of 20th- and 21st-century masterpieces

An inspired presentation of classical modernism and contemporary art, this legendary collection was assembled over 50 years by the husband-and-wife team of art dealers, Hildy and Ernst Beyeler. A foundation to oversee their legacy was created in 1982, and the museum, which opened to the public in 1997, is now one of Switzerland’s most prestigious and most visited art institutions. Set in a verdant park 30-minutes from Basel, the bright, modern structure designed by Renzo Piano fulfills the couple’s dream of an exciting synthesis of art, nature and daylight. Prized paintings by such early masters as Paul Cézanne, Pierre Bonnard, Piet Mondrian, Jean Dubuffet and Fernand Leger dominate the space, while post-war artists and African and Oceanic sculptures round out the collection.
