Fashionable incubator for contemporary photography
Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam, established in 2001, presents all facets of contemporary photography to diverse and wide-ranging audiences. The museum’s various activities include exhibitions, publications, debates and educational projects that showcase the medium’s many genres, including art, fashion and documentary. Each year, Foam presents four major exhibitions usually focused on prominent photographers — in the past highlighting Henri Cartier-Bresson, Richard Avedon and Helmut Newton — alongside more frequent and shorter presentations that celebrate young photographers, specific projects or small retrospectives. This focus on scouting and showcasing emerging talent is one of the museum’s distinguishing values as it welcomes originality and innovation. Many activities take place within the Amsterdam museum, but Foam also frequently organises events abroad in close collaboration with its partners.
