World’s largest collection of works by Matisse
With innovative exhibition and outreach programs and free entry for all, the Baltimore Museum of Art has foregrounded social equity as well as great art in recent years. The museum’s collection began in 1914 with just one painting but has expanded over time to encompass more than 95,000 works of art, including extensive holdings of 19th-century, modern and contemporary art. Over the years, the museum has undergone several expansions, including an additional wing of contemporary art and outdoor sculpture gardens. The museum holds the largest collection of works by Henri Matisse in the world and one of the most significant collections of African art in the United States. In 2020 the museum announced a long-term initiative to acquire works by artists of color to diversify its collection. In 2023 it appointed Asma Naeem to the post of director, after her tenure as chief curator responsible for solo exhibitions for artists including Isaac Julien and Salman Toor.
