Cutting-edge exhibitions in the Rockies
As a non-collecting institution the Aspen Art Museum focuses on rotating exhibitions focussed on the latest developments in international contemporary art. Originally founded in 1979, the museum moved to its critically lauded Shigeru Ban-designed building in 2014. The glass, wood and steel design by the Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect is fully integrated into its mountain landscape and features a rooftop sculpture garden with stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. The museum presents innovative exhibitions alongside education and public outreach programs and community events. It organizes the annual Aspen Art Week every summer, a draw for collectors, artists and gallerists from the US and beyond.
