Transcultural dialogues with Asia and Oceania

Established by John D. Rockefeller III in 1956 to promote greater understanding between Asia and the United States, Asia Society is a global nonprofit institution with major cultural centers in New York, Hong Kong and Houston. The Asia Society Museum in New York organizes highly regarded exhibitions of traditional and contemporary Asian and Asian American art, as well as displays of masterpieces from its permanent collection. At its core is the Mr and Mrs John D. Rockefeller III Collection of approximately 300 objects, ranging from the 11th century B.C. to the 19th century A.D., from Chinese ceramics of the Song and Ming dynasties to Chola-period Indian bronzes. Since 2007, the museum has built a growing contemporary collection of more than 100 video and new media works. To bring greater visibility to work by contemporary artists from Asia and its diaspora, the museum launched the Asia Society Triennial in 2020, the first of its kind in the US. In 2023 Yasufumi Nakamori took on the post of director, following his tenure as senior curator of international art at the Tate.
