Cutting-edge contemporary art in Denmark

ARoS Aarhus Kunstmuseum is one of northern Europe's largest museums with a collection of more than 8,000 works dating from 1770 to the present, including contemporary art by artists such as Pipilotti Rist, James Turrell, Mona Hatoum, Tony Oursler, Gilbert & George and Annika von Hausswolf. A strong symbol of the museum’s commitment to contemporary art is Olafur Eliasson’s “Your rainbow panorama,” 2011, the permanent circular skywalk that prominently surmounts the rooftop of the ten-storey structure and sets the pace of excitement for much of what happens within. One of the museum’s most distinctive areas is “The 9 Spaces,” a black box gallery dedicated to contemporary installation and video art. Starting in 2025, visitors can also experience the installation “The Dome, a Skyspace” by James Turrell, his most ambitious Skyspace to date. The museum presents six to eight major exhibitions each year and has featured world-class artists such as J.W.M. Turner, Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Bill Viola, Cindy Sherman and Sarah Sze.
