Deconstructivist destination on the Danish coast
Inaugurated in March 1996, Arken is among Denmark’s largest museums for contemporary and modern art. The building lies like a stranded ship by the sea, 20 kilometers south of Copenhagen, and its deconstructivist, nautically inspired design by Danish architect Søren Robert Lund is strikingly bold. Arken’s collection focuses on international contemporary art from 1990 to the present, and it includes works by Damien Hirst, Antony Gormley, Olafur Eliasson, Mona Hatoum, Grayson Perry and Anselm Reyle. The museum’s exhibitions often explore current global and cultural issues through a diverse range of artistic media, including painting, sculpture, video and installation art. In 2016, Arken opened a sculpture park that extends the museum’s focus on contemporary art into the outdoor environment.
