M arc Chagall’s world is one of poetry and spectacle, where circus performers dance in dreams, music is written in color, and farm animals can fly. One of the most important and prolific artists of the 20th Century, Chagall drew from a highly personal mythology to create a fantastical realm where his memories could come alive, blending the imagery and traditions of his Russian heritage with modern stylistic innovations discovered in his adopted country of France. Spanning five decades of artistic production, The Poetry of Colour: Six Paintings by Marc Chagall showcases the whimsical and theatrical sensibility linking the artist’s childhood memories to the perspective of his mature years. The resulting visual vernacular is equal parts nostalgia and imagination; it is at once immediately recognizable and completely unique.
