S otheby’s is pleased to present The New Frontier opening 16 February 2023 in our Aspen Gallery. The expanse of the Frontier has inspired generations of artists who explored National Parks and sprawling plains to return to the canvas and capture the uniqueness of the American landscape and incandescent lighting, which have enchanted artists and their audiences for centuries. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the American Frontier has become a symbol of nostalgia, no longer the great unknown to be explored, conquered and captured on camera and canvas to impress spectators. Rather, artists reminisce for tranquility, abstract landscapes and envision new frontiers well beyond the Great Plains. The exhibition will feature works by Richard Prince and Ed Ruscha, who both address the commoditization of nostalgia of the American Frontier in Hollywood. Works discussing new frontiers by Lucio Fontana and Alighiero Boetti will show the expansion of society’s definitions of frontiers in the late 20th and early 21st century. Unique pictorial depictions of the vast Frontier – old and new – will create a stunning exhibition, which will be one of the highlights of the Spring 2023 season in Aspen.
