The Connoisseur’s Cellar: A Giant Of Hong Kong’s Wine Scene

S otheby’s Wine is honoured to have the opportunity to bring to market The Connoisseur’s Cellar, starting with a 2-day, live auction extravaganza on 30th and 31st March in our Chater House Maison. Coinciding with the end of Art Basel, this outstanding live sale represents our very first live wine auction in Sotheby’s Hong Kong Maison’s atmospheric, main gallery space – a testament to the importance and positioning of this superlative cellar.

This extraordinary Single-Owner cellar is a truly comprehensive collection in every sense of the word. Its breadth and depth are incredibly impressive, and the lots offered in this first auction, comprising more than 7,000 bottles, still represent only a small portion of the wider cellar, which numbers in the tens of thousands of bottles in total.

The Connoisseur’s Cellar: A Boundless Burgundy Collection, Day 1

Divided into a 2-day live auction, on the first day we will dedicate our focus to the crème de la crème of the wine establishment. With more than 100 lots alone from Romanée-Conti, Leroy and Rousseau, Day 1 introduces us to the real pinnacles of the collection. Aside from these three elite names, this Sunday afternoon auction will see us offering outstanding wines from the likes of René Engel, Méo-Camuzet, Comte Liger-Belair, Domaine Dujac, de Vogüé, Rouget, Leflaive, Roulot, and many more. Finishing off this exciting first day, we will have an outstanding selection of Prestige Cuvée Champagne from Krug, Dom Pérignon and Roederer, along with Bordeaux’s greatest names, the highlight being a mouth-watering vertical of Château d’Yquem from 1934 to the 1982 vintage.

Provenance & Storage

The most prestigious Single Owner collections are always united by one thing in particular: an unwavering dedication to assembling a cellar comprising the world’s very best wines sourced only with the most impeccable provenance. That is certainly true of The Connoisseur, and the lots herein are expected to generate excitement and demand throughout the global wine community as a result.

As we have come to know each other, it has become clear that this collector has a complete devotion to purchasing only from the best sources, and the frequency with which he is able to generously share older bottles that have clearly been outstandingly cared for, in excellent condition, is a testament to the focus with which this collection has been built. The vast majority of the bottles offered here were purchased directly from a very narrow selection of the world’s most reputable wine merchants, along with some from Sotheby’s most prestigious named Single Owner sales. In the process of inspecting these lots, we have seen original invoices across the board for all of these wines, an extraordinary testament to The Connoisseur’s dedication and record-keeping.

This is a very knowledgeable collector, who is serious about their wines, but is also clear that the most important facet of wine appreciation is generosity, and enjoying bottles in a low key, humble, and relaxed way. It is therefore our pleasure to be able to offer these beautifully cared for bottles to our bidders around the world now, to be further enjoyed and generously shared.

We are delighted that the owner of this stunning cellar has entrusted us with this auction, and our thanks go to them first and foremost. It has been a pleasure to work with them in bringing this sale to market, and we look forward to seeing enthusiastic bidding when we offer these wines in our first ever live wine auction within our Chater House Maison galleries. Happy bidding!
