T om Levine lived a remarkable life, surrounded by art, music and friends. His collection was formed with an artist’s eye, one that applauded aesthetic functionality. Tom’s art can be found in prestigious museum collections such as MoMA and The Whitney, but it was in visiting his own home and studio that one could see how he was truly delighted by even complicated beauty. His deep friendships with other artists such as Jasper Johns, and plans to donate his Connecticut home to an artist’s residency program, illustrate his ongoing commitment to our cultural landscape. It is Sotheby’s privilege to share Tom’s legacy by offering works from his collection at auction.
Included in the sale are 26 prints by Jasper Johns, featuring many of the artist’s most celebrated motifs, such as numbers, flags, ale cans and crosshatching. The group is led by two monotypes, one of which includes the stamped Sign Language gestures spelling out ‘Happy Birthday Tom’ (lot 10). Several works highlighted in the sale were gifted directly to Tom Levine by the artist and many include personal dedications.
There will also be a corresponding sale of fine art and sculptural objects from Levine’s collection at STAIR on Thursday, June 3rd at 11:00am.
