T his August, as Aspen's summer season reaches its zenith, Sotheby's will open an exhibition exploring the intersection between art and nature, Into the Woods. Featuring works by artists including Beatriz Milhazes, Cindy Sherman, Shara Hughes, Robert Longo, and Alex Katz, the exhibition will highlight the ways in which artists have drawn inspiration from the great outdoors, but also, from the medium of wood.
The works in the show will pay homage to the dynamism and power of our shared environment using both representational and abstract languages, painting and drawing, photography and sculpture. Evolving from the mimetic practices of 19th century landscape painting, as championed by the Hudson River School, the Impressionist movement in France launched a reevaluation of the genre that opened the door to Contemporary artists finding infinite new lens through which to approach nature. As our world has become increasingly more digital, nature remains a primary source of inspiration for artists to return.
Sotheby's Aspen is pleased to invite the entire neighborhood to Into the Woods.
