S otheby’s is pleased to present its marquee fall Evening Sale of Impressionist & Modern Art, to be held in New York on Wednesday, 28 October, immediately following the Contemporary Art Evening Auction.
The sale will be highlighted by Vincent van Gogh’s Fleurs dans un verre from 1890, a particularly exceptional example of the artist’s flower paintings, painted in a fever of activity only days before his untimely death. We are also honored to offer a selection of works from the Brooklyn Museum, including a stunning canvas by Claude Monet depicting a cluster of tidal islands just south of his beloved Giverny. Additional highlights include iconic examples by Surrealist masters Man Ray, Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte.

VINCENT VAN GOGH
FLEURS DANS UN VERRE
Painted in 1890
ESTIMATE $14,000,000 – 18,000,000
Fleurs dans un verre belongs to a very small group of floral still lifes that Vincent van Gogh completed during his seventy-day residency in Auvers-sur-Oise, where he would bring his life to an end in the height of the summer of 1890. Although traditionally assigned to his time in Arles in J.B. de la Faille’s 1928 and 1939 catalogue raisonnés of the artist’s work, the present canvas is now agreed to have been part of the artist’s final, dramatic artistic production in this hamlet north of Paris. In his seventy days in Auvers, van Gogh would paint seventy or so canvases, a huge output by any measure. Many of these canvases represent the village of Auvers itself and its immediate surroundings. There are also major portraits and, rarer still, still lifes such as Fleurs dans un verre.
